January 23, 1789 – Georgetown College, the first Catholic University in the United States, is founded in Georgetown, Maryland (now a part of Washington, D.C.)
March 4, 1789 – In New York City, the first Congress of the United States meets, putting the United States Constitution into effect.
July 11, 1789 – Jacques Necker is dismissed as France’s Finance Minister sparking the Storming of the Bastille.
July 12, 1789 – French revolutionary and radical journalist Camille Desmoulins gave a speech, following hearing the news that France’s financial minister Jacques Necker has been dismissed. The speech called the citizens to arms, which lead to the falling of the Bastille two days later.
July 14, 1789 – Alexander Mackenzie finally completes his journey to the mouth of the great river he hoped would take him to the Pacific, but which turns out to flow into the Arctic Ocean. Later named after him, the Mackenzie is the second-longest river system in North America.
September 11, 1789 – Alexander Hamilton is appointed the first United States Secretary of the Treasury.
September 29, 1789 – The United States Department of War first establishes a regular army with a strength of several hundred men.
October 5, 1789 – French Revolution: Women of Paris march to Versailles in the March on Versailles to confront Louis XVI about his refusal to promulgate the decrees on the abolition of feudalism, demand bread, and have the King and his court moved to Paris.
November 21, 1789 – North Carolina ratifies the United States Constitution and is admitted as the 12th U.S. state.
November 26, 1789 – A national Thanksgiving Day is observed in the United States as recommended by President George Washington and approved by Congress.
