January 31, 1971 – The Winter Soldier Investigation, organized by the Vietnam Veterans Against the War to publicize war crimes and atrocities by Americans and allies in Vietnam, begin in Detroit, Michigan.
February 13, 1971 – Vietnam War: Backed by American air and artillery support, South Vietnamese troops invade Laos.
August 27, 1971 – An attempted coup fails in the African nation of Chad. The Government of Chad accuses Egypt of playing a role in the attempt and breaks off diplomatic relations.
September 13, 1971 – People’s Republic of China: Chairman Mao Zedong’s second in command and successor Marshal Lin Biao flees the country via plane after the failure of alleged coup against Mao. The plane crashes in Mongolia, killing all aboard.
September 20, 1971 – Having weakened after making landfall in Nicaragua the previous day, Hurricane Irene regains enough strength to be renamed Hurricane Olivia, making it the first known hurricane to cross from the Atlantic Ocean into the Pacific.
October 15, 1971 – The start of the 2500-year celebration of Iran, celebrating the birth of Persia.
November 23, 1971 – Representatives of the People’s Republic of China attend the United Nations, including the United Nations Security Council, for the first time.
